Thomas C. Abshire, MD is currently Executive VP, Medical Sciences Institute and Chief Medical Officer, Versiti, Senior Investigator, Versiti Blood Research Institute and Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and the CTSI, Medical College of Wisconsin. Before joining Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin in 2009, he held the Hemophilia of Georgia, Inc. Director’s Chair in Hemostasis, and was Director of the Comprehensive Hemostasis Program at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He also was the PI for the Uniform Data Collection (UDC of the CDC for Hemophilia Region IVS. He also served for 13 years as Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at Emory and Children’s. Dr. Abshire is a distinguished graduate of the US Air Force Academy (1975). He attended medical school at Tulane University (1979), fulfilled his pediatric residency training at David Grant USAF Medical Center (1982) and completed pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training at the University of Colorado Health Science Center (1988). Prior to joining the faculty at Emory University, Dr. Abshire completed a career in the United States Air Force with an emphasis as a clinician-educator where he was the PI of a large Pediatric Oncology Group Relapsed Leukemia Study, recipient of several medical student and resident teaching awards. His leadership in in resident and fellowship training continued at the national level (American Society of Hematology (ASH) and American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) while he was at Emory.
During his 30+ years as a practicing hematologist (recognized since 2009 as a Best Doctors in America), and as a clinician investigator, Dr. Abshire has maintained a steady involvement with clinical trials and new product development in hemostasis and thrombosis, including laboratory evaluation of mild bleeding disorders and therapeutic intervention in hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and thrombosis. As a clinical investigator (PI, Co-PI or collaborator), he has been involved in 16 national/international trials, with his most recent NIH R01 clinical trial effort in collaboration with Dr Robert Montgomery (MPI’s): Comparative Effectiveness in the Diagnosis of VWD, He has published over 110 manuscripts and is past editor of a textbook on hemostasis and transfusion medicine. He has been a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings. Dr. Abshire holds memberships in several academic societies including the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society (HTRS), International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and American Society of Hematology. He has demonstrated strong leadership skills in several national hemostasis/thrombosis research organizations, including being past President of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society (HTRS) and past Chair, American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, (ATHN), an organization committed to development of a national database and to performing outcomes, population science and clinically-related research. He recently was recognized by outstanding service awards from both of these organizations.
