BloodCenter of Wisconsin to host Declaration for Donations Blood Drive

Milwaukee – June 18, 2018

Milwaukee – June 18, 2018 – BloodCenter of Wisconsin, part of Versiti, will host the 17th Annual Declaration for Donations Blood Drive Wednesday, June 20 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday, June 21, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Wisconsin Products Pavilion at Wisconsin State Fair Park.

As a token of gratitude, all attempting donors will receive a free ticket to the Wisconsin State Fair (Aug. 2-12). Complimentary child care, parking, breakfast and lunch will also be provided.

Local patient who received 90 units of blood thanks life-saving donors

Dawn Marisch from West Allis (above) suffered a ruptured aneurysm while at work as an elementary school principal, and began the fight of her life. Over four days, she received a remarkable 90 units of blood, platelets and plasma. She would not be alive today if not for the blood donors who helped to save her life.

Dawn is now a blood donor herself – her O negative blood type is the universal blood type used in emergency situations like the one that she survived. She’s grateful for the chance to help others and understands the amazing impact just one blood donation can make.

“I am humbled by the number of generous donors it took to save my life,” says Dawn.

Significant summer need

Blood donations decrease in summer months, when the need is often the greatest to treat accident victims and others in emergency situations. Summer can often mean higher numbers of traumas than we see at other times of the year – which makes the need for O negative blood all the more critical. Call 1-877-BE-A-HERO (1-877-232-4376) or visit bcw.edu to make an appointment.

Anyone 17 or older who is in general good health and meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to donate blood.  Parental consent is required for 16-year-olds to donate. Appointments are preferred to ensure a quick and convenient donation, but walk-in donors are also welcome. The entire process takes about an hour. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes birth date.
