Ohio State vs Michigan Blood Battle 2019

The battle is on! Versiti Blood Center of Ohio announces Oct. 31 Blood Battle blood drive

Columbus – September 25, 2019

This is the year the trophy comes back home.  Versiti Blood Center of Ohio, the blood provider to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, has officially announced the starting date of the 38th Annual Blood Battle and its plans to defeat “The Team up North.”

The Blood Battle kickoff blood drive is scheduled for Thurs., Oct. 31, at the Ohio Union from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The goal for the kickoff event, which will begin with Brutus Buckeye donating blood, is 100 donations. All Buckeye blood donors will receive a commemorative Blood Battle T-shirt, and will be entered to win two tickets to the big rivalry football game on Nov. 30 in Ann Arbor. The prize also includes an overnight stay.

Former running back to sign T-shirts

Former Buckeye Chris “Beanie” Wells will be on hand to cheer on blood donors and sign Blood Battle T-shirts from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wells, a team MVP in 2008, broke a 52-yard run for a touchdown in the 2006 Ohio State-Michigan game that put the Buckeyes up for the rest of the game.

For Elise Gramlich, president of the Buckeye Blood Club at The Ohio State University, this battle is personal. Gramlich began donating blood in high school when her 4-year-old niece needed lifesaving blood transfusions for a rare brain condition. Her niece passed away at the age of 5.

I would say it is not even an hour to potentially save a person’s life,” said Gramlich. “You will never know the impact you are having on an entire family. It can impact a person’s life forever.”

All day blood drive festivities feature music, activities and opportunities to register to donate blood during the battle, which runs through Nov. 27, with a goal of 2,000 total donations. Each donor will  receive a commemorative Blood Battle t-shirt, as well as a Blaze Pizza BOGO coupon. Skyline Chili will provide food for all of our Buckeye donors.

There will be many campus Blood Battle drives during the month of November. Visit Versiti.org/bloodbattle for a complete listing and to schedule an appointment. Or call 1-800-485-6594.

Donating at campus blood drives through Versiti means you’re helping patients at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.

The Blood Battle is a longstanding tradition which began in 1982. In 2018, more than 4,500 blood donations were collected between the two schools during the competition. Last year, “The Team up North” won by a narrow margin, but the OSU community still contributed 2,176 lifesaving donations.
