Team Liquid Heal for Real Blood Drive

Video game community comes together to bolster local blood supply

Aurora, Ill. – June 20, 2019

It’s the ultimate 1-up. Versiti Blood Center of Illinois is bringing together video game players and gaming fans to give the gift of life through blood donations.

Through its membership with Blood Centers of America, Versiti Blood Center of Illinois has partnered with Team Liquid, a multi-regional, professional e-sports organization with a national fan base of more than seven million gamers. The partnership’s goal is to engage a new generation of donors between 20-34 years old, which accounts for less than 20 percent of blood donations nationally.

“As blood health innovators, the generosity of blood donors is at the heart of Versiti’s life-saving mission. Team Liquid and their fans have a passion for helping our community, and together, we will engage and educate young people who have the power to save lives through blood donation,” said Versiti Blood Center of Illinois Site Lead Amy Smith.

As a token of thanks, those who donate on behalf of Team Liquid will receive a limited edition “Team Liquid Turns Red” t-shirt, available at all Versiti Blood Center of Illinois donor centers and select community blood drives.

“We’re proud to partner with Blood Centers of America and its members on this life-saving initiative,” said Team Liquid’s CEO, Steve Arhancet. “Our fans are such a supportive, tight-knit community, and now we’re calling on them to help us accomplish something bigger than what we could achieve in any competition. Collectively, we have the opportunity to make a measurable impact on communities as well as save lives.”

As the blood products supplier to 71 hospitals in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana, the need for blood is constant. All blood types are needed, but especially type O negative, which is the universal type that can be safely received by all patients and is given to those undergoing surgery, kids and adults battling cancer and those in emergency situations.

Donors can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-7TO-GIVE (1-800-786-4483) or by visiting versiti.org/Illinois. Appointments are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome.
