BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s Research Foundation recently awarded the inaugural R. Douglas Ziegler Innovation Award to Weiguo Cui, M.D., PhD, for advancing research into how immune cells can better fight cancer.
Dr. Cui, an associate investigator at BloodCenter’s Blood Research Institute, is studying how a person’s own immune system can be taught to fight infectious diseases and beat cancer. His focus is on memory T cells and how to use their ability to “remember” the pathogens and tumor cells that they’ve previously encountered to fight against these diseases. Through this $40,000 award, he hopes to continue to make new breakthroughs in treating a wide variety of solid tumors.
The award was founded in memory of the late R. Douglas Ziegler, whose decades of dedication to BloodCenter, including his service on its board of directors, helped the organization achieve new medical advancements and carry forth its life-saving mission. As a fitting tribute, his family established the R. Douglas Ziegler Innovation Fund to foster and accelerate cutting-edge research at the Blood Research Institute.
"Innovation is at the core of everything we do. This tribute not only drives us forward, but also honors somebody who was so important to this organization," says Gilbert White, M.D., executive vice president for research at the Blood Research Institute. "On behalf of the Ziegler family, we congratulate Weiguo on receiving this award. We look forward to the results of his research and the impact it is certain to have on families and patients fighting cancer,” says Peter D. Ziegler, board director, Versiti, BloodCenter of Wisconsin and BloodCenter Research Foundation.
