The Summer Step-Up Program

The Summer Step-Up recognizes 501(c)(3) organizations focusing on improving patient health schools, and related organizations that help save lives by holding blood drives during times of high need. Sign up now to earn up to $2,000* for your organization.

It’s as simple as 1 – 2 – 3.

  1. Sign up to sponsor a blood drive between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Any health focused nonprofit, youth group that supports schools or local organizations (such as Leukemia Lymphoma Society, American Heart Association, sports boosters, drama club, NHS, 4-H, Scouts, etc.) is eligible.
  2. Set your drive goal and recruit donors
  3. Michigan Blood will provide your organization with a grant/scholarship.

FAQs and Requirements

  • Who can participate in the Summer Step-Up program?

    Your organization must be a youth, school, or 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a focus in improving patient health. Your organization must also be in an eligible service area of Michigan Blood.

  • What does your school or group need to do?

    You must hold a community blood drive (open to the public) between Memorial Day and Labor Day. A registration goal and drive size will be predetermined and agreed upon, and must be met in order to qualify for the grant.

    A sponsor or organization adult leader, athletic director, club advisor or principal is required in the planning and execution of the Summer Step Up program and necessary to maximize efforts on behalf of youth organizations.

    Lastly, the Summer Step Up Program Agreement must be completed, signed and submitted to the field representative for disbursement of the funds to the organization.

  • What's in it for your school or group?

    Sign up enough donors, and for every person who attempts to donate, Michigan Blood will make a $10 contribution to your school or group!

  • What happens if my drive is cancelled?

    If a blood drive is cancelled due to uncontrollable circumstances, organization can still participate in the program as long as the drive is rescheduled within three (3) months of cancellation date.

  • Are there any other requirements we should know about?
    1. Any School and/or Youth Organization in the Michigan Blood areas of service is eligible to participate in the Michigan Blood Summer Step-Up program. 
    2. To qualify for the Michigan Blood Summer Step-Up program a blood drive must be held in the summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 
    3. The blood drive goal and number of presenting donors required based on drive size will be predetermined and agreed upon between the Michigan Blood Account Representative and the Sponsoring Organization. The agreed upon blood drive goal must be attained to qualify for award. Funds will be disbursed after your successful blood drive. The total number of presenting donors who attempt to donate at the Summer Step-Up drive will determine the full amount of the award. 
    4. If a blood drive is canceled due to inclement weather or a school closing of any type, please work with your Account Representative to reschedule during an appropriate timeframe. If for any reason Michigan Blood is unable to fulfill a drive, monies will be awarded based on the number of pints collected at the first subsequent Michigan Blood drive held by your organization. 
    5. The Organization and Sponsor Lead will determine how the funds will benefit the youth program. 
    6. The Summer Step-Up Program Agreement must be completed, signed and submitted to your Account Representative for disbursement of the funds to the youth organization.
