Immunohematology Reference Laboratories

Versiti’s Immunohematology Reference Labs support all types of transfusion medicine cases.

Experts in resolving complex immunohematology cases

Versiti’s Immunohematology Reference Laboratories (IRL) are highly specialized areas that focus on the identification and resolution of red cell transfusion-related problems. We have become known as the reference lab of reference labs, as our team of experts includes renowned physicians and the largest collection of SBB-certified technologists in America. Our IRLs are accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and maintain satisfactory standing with all inspection agencies.

Our reference labs offer:

  • 24/7 coverage, including weekends and holidays
  • Easily accessible and courteous staff
  • Serologic investigation and consultation
  • Procurement of antigen-negative donor units
  • Response to requests for rare donor units from the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP)

Versiti ensures the provision of antigen-negative and rare units. The Versiti Immunohematology Reference Laboratory is available 24/7 to provide antigen-typed red cells. From our headquarters to our depots, we carry an abundant supply of readily available antigen-negative units. We leverage information on more than 250,000 genotyped donors, the largest known pool of genotyped donors in the United States. This resource allows us to support the vast majority of antigen-negative requests, including rare antigens. In the uncommon event that we cannot fulfill a rare unit request, we seek assistance from the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP).

Medical consultative services are provided by our team of more than 20 highly qualified transfusion medicine specialists, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their expertise and this service transcend all aspects of transfusion medicine, including routine transfusion problems, platelet disorders, bleeding and thrombolytic disorders, transplantation, and therapeutic apheresis. This service is triggered by a 24/7 on-call physician, a rotational responsibility shared within this physician team.
