September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, Save a Life, Donate Blood!

Aurora, IL – August 29, 2017

Heartland is the Leading Provider of Donated Blood for Chicago-area Hospitals

Aurora, IL (August 29, 2017) - Heartland Blood Centers, the leading supplier of donated blood to more than 70 Chicago- area hospitals, announced its support of September National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Sickle Cell Awareness Month has been recognized by the federal government since 1983, to bring attention to sickle cell disease, a genetically inherited blood disorder, which affects approximately 100,000 Americans.

In 2015, Heartland Blood Centers launched the Red is Life program to create awareness, education and action within the Greater Chicagoland area about blood donation in underrepresented communities. Studies have shown that blood donated from someone of the same ethnicity as the patient reduces the risk of complications during transfusion. In patients who receive multiple blood transfusions, donor patient compatibility is crucial as transfusion related complications can lead to organ failure and even death.

Heartland is kicking off September with a blood drive held at the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois' office on Friday September 1st. TaLana Hughes, Executive Director of SCDAI said, "I'm acutely aware of the need for blood donations in the treatment of sickle cell disease, blood donors have the ability to increase the quality of life of those affected by this disease and we hope many will heed our call to donate."

Throughout the month of September, a number of organizations have chosen to partner with Heartland in support of this disease that affects so many people. Heartland Blood Centers urges all ethnicities to donate on behalf of those in your communities that are in need.
