BloodFLOW Webinar Series
von Willebrand Lab Evaluation: Merging Assay Choices with Recent Consensus Guidelines
Date: Wednesday, December 15th 1PM CST
Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a common inherited bleeding disorder, characterized by either quantitative or qualitative deficiency of von Willebrand factor (VWF) function. Acquired forms of VWD also occur. The accurate diagnosis of VWD is challenging requiring clinical suspicion followed by specific laboratory studies. Dr. Kenneth Friedman will review the multiple available assays for evaluation of suspected von Willebrand disease, highlighting the recently published evidence-based diagnostic guidelines.
Speakers: Kenneth Friedman, MD

Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) sponsors several seminar series and lectures throughout the year. We bring together graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and investigators to hear presentations by world-renowned scientists whose work is relevant to research at VBRI. Topics include:
- Transfusion medicine
- Stem cell biology and hematopoiesis
- Thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology
We also host:
- A Versiti Medical Sciences Institute-sponsored seminar series that addresses clinical topics in hematology and hematologic disorders.
- The Mosesson Lecture on Thrombosis, established by Michael W. Mosesson, MD, brings an outstanding researcher in thrombosis medicine to VBRI every year.
- The Aster Lecture, presented annually, brings a prominent researcher in the field of platelet biology to VBRI. This lecture is presented in honor of Richard H. Aster, MD, VBRI senior investigator emeritus.
Versiti offers day-long “wet workshops” organized and presented by Versiti’s Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) Program, Clinical Education and Immunohematology Reference Laboratories. These workshops provide training in new skills and problem-resolution techniques for medical laboratory scientists working in hospital blood banks and transfusion services. Versiti offers these workshops every Fall and Spring. More information can be found on beLearning.
